Chapter 16

Vanessa

Emily woke up after long enough of me lying there next to her, stroking her hair. She groaned, reached up to her hair and swatted at my hand, and then she jolted and sat bolt-upright, nearly falling out of bed, looking at me wide-eyed.

“Oh my god,” she blurted, going red. “Whoa. It’s you. You’re in my bed. Oh my god, I thought you were just a dream.”

I stared for the longest time before I fell back onto the pillow, laughing. “Good morning to you, too, Emily. How are you feeling?”

She put a hand over her face, covering her growing smile and her deepening blush. “Not… too bad. Kind of... tired.”

“I wonder why,” I laughed, swatting lightly at her arm. “Never thought you’d be so insatiable. You seem so sweet and innocent.”

She covered her face. I loved when she did that. “Don’t make fun of me, I’ll cry.”

“Lie back down and let me cuddle you. I’m not making fun of you, angel. I don’t know about you, but I loved last night.”

She mumbled something unintelligible, lay down with her back to me so I could hold her from behind and rest my head against the back of hers, and finally, she said, “Me too. You’re, uh… you’re amazing, Vanessa.”

“Mm.” I felt like I was glowing, holding her like that. This was Emily, here in my arms, curled up naked with me in her bed. “Call me V.”

“What?” She craned her neck to look at me. “Like, just the letter?”

“If you like it.” I ran the backs of my fingers down along her side. “It’s a nickname I reserve for… special… women.”

She squirmed and rolled around to face me, her eyes lit up. “Oh my god. You have a secret nickname you’re sharing with me.”

I stroked her hair. “I told you, I like pet names. It’s not exactly a secret, but it’s still reserved. And you’re definitely… special.”

“That’s so hot,” she sighed. “A cool one-letter nickname reserved for girls you sleep with, you have those muscles and those tattoos, you’re dominating in bed. God. V. You’re perfect.”

I paused. “Are we just—girls who sleep with each other?”

“Oh, uh…” She blinked fast, her eyes wide. I almost never saw her without her glasses. She looked like a different person. Still an adorable one, obviously. “I mean… well… girls you’re… dating, I guess…” She looked away, rubbing her head. “Assuming we are, you know. Dating, that is. We’re—that, right? I mean, dating?”

I laughed, nudging her cheek with my knuckles. “You are too cute, cherry.”

“Cherry?”

I grinned. “It’s a cute one. Besides, you’re sweet and bright red half the time. It fits.”

She covered her face. I laughed, pulled her hands away, and kissed her, and it felt so right, like I could have spent the rest of my life just lying here and kissing her slowly, gently.

“I hope we’re dating,” I said. “But it’s up to you, of course.”
